Paths, Part 10

My child, listen to me and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life. I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths. When you walk, you won’t be held back; when you run, you won’t stumble.
Proverbs 4:10-12

Hello! *waves* welcome to our 10th installment of the Paths series. If you are just joining in, you can get all caught up by clicking here to read all 9 chapters in sequence, or as individual posts by clicking here. I'm planning on posting daily this week, so if you didn't get a chance to stop by yesterday, be sure you start on part 9 before you start here or you'll be all confused.

Now that all the housekeeping is out of the way, let's get rollin'- I have a certain point I'd like to be in by Sunday.... and if we're going to do that, we'd better waste no more time-

So, the last I left off, I had left my number with Shawn* and headed off to spring break- hoping he would take a-not-so-subtle hint, call and express his undying devotion. Day after day passed. I jumped on my brothers when they walked by the phone. I refused to go to the store with my mom I stayed up late and rose early so I would not miss anything. The phone did not ring.

Finally, my mom drug me out of the house for some reason I can't remember, to some place I do not remember, and lo and behold I ran into Daniel.* (remember him? the reggae boy who flaked out in post number
five? that guy.) Now out of school and in college, we chatted about the phone call I was sure was going to come any minute. Daniel told me that he had a bet for me. If I was wrong, and Shawn didn't call by that night, I had to let him make me dinner the next evening. We shook on the deal.

Of course, Daniel was right. Shawn wasn't going to ever call. The next night, I was getting ready to head over to his house for dinner when the phone rang! I ran to the living room as my mom answered.... I knew it! I knew it was going to be him!

It wasn't. It was my brother, who needed someone to pick him up from work at the local gas station. My mom for some reason that I cannot remember but that I thought was INCREDIBLY UNFAIR! told me I needed to go pick up my DUMB BROTHER. She did not care that DANIEL WAS WAITING! (am I the only teenage girl that spoke IN ALL CAPS AND EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!????) So, I jumped in my little red Nissan and drove off to go pick up my DUMB BROTHER!

Upon arrival at the gas station, I stomped into the service bay. "LET'S GO! GAWSH! WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG?!?!" I said with all the grace and sweetness my loving sisterly heart could muster.
My brother didn't hurry. He was busy raiding the food service truck that was left in the service bay at the station. I could NOT BELIEVE the INCONSIDERATE BEHAVIOR! I HAVE A DATE! I AM GOING TO LEAVE YOU IN 5 MINUTES, LIKE IT OR NOT! I folded my arms and jutted my hip out, tossing my hair in a sign of my indignation, and was about to say something else when I noticed someone standing behind me... and out of the corner of my eye, I saw THE ONE.

Oh yes, my friends, it was THE ONE. I knew it. Bells ringing, birds singing, room spinning, THE ONE. My brother introduced us... and as we shook hands I suddenly wasn't in such a big rush.
Take your time, my sweet brother. I'm cool like that, cause we're so close. Earlier? oh that? Oh, just a game we play... haha. You thought I was really in a hurry, huh? Who talks like that anyway? Haha. not me. Oh, did I just touch your arm again?

Yup, I was that smooth. On the way home, I grilled my brother... what was his name again? how old is he? DID YOU SAY HE IS IN COLLEGE? Does he have a girlfriend? A wife? A car? I must know!

My brother, to his credit, was really very nice about the whole thing. He encouraged me, told me that THE ONE was a really nice guy, and asked if he could tell him that I was interested. BE COOL was my only request.

I eventually got to Daniel's house for dinner, I can honestly tell you I remember only tiny bits and pieces about the whole visit. I don't even remember leaving. I was so worried that my brother was going to ruin everything and that we wasn't going to JUST BE COOL.

My brother was cool alright... he showed THE ONE my picture every single day...
do you like my sister? what do you think of my sister? you should ask out my sister. she'd totally say yes.

Of course, I didn't know that. What I heard was THE ONE asked about you today. THE ONE asked for your phone number. THE ONE wants to know if you have a boyfriend. My self-esteem at this point had actually hit rock bottom. I figured my brother was just pulling my leg, and so I moped around for awhile, and wondered if I was really going to have to show my face in school after this blatant rejection.

The Saturday night before Easter, I was working late at the restaurant. The men at the counter (same bachelors who ate there every night and drank a million cups of coffee before closing) were teasing me about which one of them would get to take me out first after my 18th birthday. I giggled and flirted, my spirits temporarily lifted when the diner's door opened... and in came a delivery of two dozen pink roses with my name on the card. I opened the envelope- they were from................

Oh, my, look at the time. It's waaaay past my bedtime......guess we'll have to pick up on the story later....

more to come~
